Recreational Coaching Details
Participation as a Recreational coach provides the opportunity for any interested parent or volunteer learn coaching principles,
gain an appreciation for the game, receive an introduction to the OSU program, and most importantly experience the
challenges and rewards that come with coaching a youth sports team.
The club supports our coaches with materials and clinics that provide guidance on the OSU approach to soccer development
along with a suggested practice schedule and drills. Prior knowledge of soccer is not required to be a successful coach, especially
at the younger ages.
Coordinators identify the group of potential coaches and managers from registration information. The Coordinators assign a
Coach, Assistant Coaches, and a Manager to each team, from the available group of volunteers. If there are not enough,
additional volunteers may need to be recruited from the division parents. Volunteers are always assigned with their child’s team.
Coaching clinics
Rec coaching clinics are scheduled for Saturday May 1, 8, and 15, at the South Nepean Park and Clubhouse. Clinics will be split
by field size: U6-8, U9-11, U12-18, will include a mix of classroom and field work, and will be 45 minutes in length (60 minutes for U12-18).
Coaching manuals
New coaching manuals are being developed this year, with a different manual for each group (U6-8, U9-111, U12-18). These manuals will be much shorter than the previous binders, with information on key elements of the game, age-specific rules, tips
for dealing with medical issues (e.g. sprain, concussion, bloody nose), and a 13-week practice program. The more detailed
manual with additional drills and information will be available from the club website.
